Some Facts
- Flawlessly was born in 1988 at Harbor View Farm in Fellowship, Marion County, Florida. Racing in the colors of Louis Wolfson’s Harborview Farm, she was another in a special line of horses that Mr. Wolfson bred and/or owned, including 1963 two-year-old champion colt and Chef de Race Raise a Native; 1965 Horse of the Year Roman Brother; Chef de Race Exclusive Native – who sired Affirmed and the 1981 Kentucky Derby winning filly Genuine Risk; and American Triple Crown winner and two-time Horse of the Year Affirmed.
- Flawlessly was sired by Affirmed and is one of seven of his progeny to win a million dollars or more in North America. She was foaled by lightly raced La Confidence (1980 by Nijinsky II) and was the mare’s second of ten foals.
- In Flawlessly’s first eight starts she was trained by Richard Dutrow and raced in New York and New Jersey. These races were all on dirt and included wins in two popular grade threes, the Gardenia and the Tempted. She also ran in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on dirt and finished seventh to Meadow Star.
- After bleeding and being pulled up in her first race in 1991, the Busanda Stakes, Flawlessly was shipped out west to California where she was trained by Charlie Whittingham. She never ran on dirt again, running her final twenty starts on turf.
- In her first eight races, all on the east coast Flawlessly was ridden by five different jockeys. Once she was relocated to California, she was ridden by Chris McCarron throughout the balance of her career.
- On turf, Flawlessly made twenty starts and had a 13-4-2 record. Her lifetime totals for both dirt and turf were 28-16-4-3, with earnings of $2,572,536. She dominated distaff turf racing on the West Coast for three years and had a 9-2-2 record in fourteen grade one starts, missing the top three only once when she finished ninth in the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Mile to Lure. Her favorite distance on turf was nine furlongs, and she won nine times at the distance. She won the Matriarch Handicap and the Romana Handicap three times each and the Beverly Hills Handicap twice.
- Flawlessly retired after her six-year-old campaign. At stud, she produced two fillies, both sired by Storm Cat. The first, Flawlessness, won once in nine starts and died of colitis in 2000. The second, Dreamlike, produced three stake winners: Woke Up Dreamin, Denomination, and Lemon Drop Dream.
- Flawlessly won the Eclipse Award for Champion Turf Female in 1992 and 1993 and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2004. She died suddenly in 2002 at the age of fourteen.
